One of the best ways to ripen fruit and vegetables is to place them on your kitchen counter, but this often presents a problem of gnats in your kitchen. If you would like to keep your fruit and vegetables on your kitchen counter, you may need to find a way to keep the gnats away. Here are two tips that may help you control the gnat population in your kitchen.
Be Selective With What You Put On Your Counter
Fruit does ripen better when it is at room temperature, but it stays fresher longer if it is kept cold. Because of this, you should avoid leaving any fruit out that is already ripe. When it reaches the point of ripeness, you should place it in your refrigerator.
Gnats and fruit flies are very similar pests, and both typically come after ripe fruit only. If you can avoid leaving ripe fruits and vegetables on your counter, you probably will not have a problem with gnats in your kitchen.
Make A Gnat Trap
Even if you are careful about the fruits and vegetables you leave out, you may still end up with some gnats in your kitchen. This is a very annoying problem to have, but you might be able to stop the gnats completely by making a gnat trap. To do this, you will need:
- A small jar
- Apple cider vinegar
- Dish soap
- Plastic wrap
To make a gnat trap, place some apple cider vinegar into the jar you have. Place a few drops of liquid dish soap in the jar too and cover it with plastic wrap. Next, make a few holes in the top of the plastic wrap.
As the gnats smell the apple cider vinegar, they will go into the jar. They will instantly be trapped in the liquid and will not be able to get out. To make this solution even more effective, you could place a piece of fruit in the jar too. Make sure you choose a piece that is really ripe, though, because this will attract the gnats even more. You will have to pour this solution out and replace it every few days.
If you follow these tips and are still struggling with pests like this in your kitchen, it might be wise to call a company that offers professional pest control services. They will be able to help you put a stop to all the pests you are trying to get rid of.
