How To Fix The Pilot Light On A Water Heater

Posted on

A hot water heater is one of the most important appliances in a home. It generates hot water which means hot showers, cleaner laundry and dishes, and countless other household uses. When a hot water heater goes out or is not working, it can be disastrous. There are many different things that can go wrong with a hot water heater and because they deal with gas and electricity, they can cause a potentially dangerous situation if you do not know what you are doing. In many situations you may want to try and fix the unit yourself, while other problems may require a professional plumber. Below are some things that you can do to try and get your water heating working again.

Pilot Light Repair. Many times the problem with the water heater might be with the pilot light. It could be as simple as lighting it again or you may need to replace the whole pilot light assembly.

a. Lighting the Pilot.  Lighting the pilot is as simple as following the instructions on the unit itself. It usually consists of turning off the gas to the unit, letting the air clear and then turning the gas back on and pushing a button to light the pilot.

b. Cleaning the Pilot Light Assembly. Another way that you can try to fix the pilot light is to clean the pilot light assembly. This involves removing the pilot light assembly and cleaning the thermocouple. A dirty thermocouple will prevent the pilot light from lighting or staying lit. Using a wire brush, you can clean the pilot assembly.

c. Replacing the Pilot Light Assembly. If cleaning the pilot light and thermocouple do not work, you may need to replace the whole pilot light assembly. This will include removing the pilot light and the thermocouple and replacing it with new ones. This can be involved but can be done by a novice for just the price of the part and a few hours of time.

Fixing the pilot light is one of the easier tasks when it comes to fixing a water heater. Besides trying to fix the pilot light, there are not very many tasks that can be done by yourself without the help of a professional plumber. They will be able to fix leaks, replace burners, or many other tasks that are more involved. For more information, contact a professional like A Absolute Plumbing & Heating.
