What Can You Do About A Flooded Room Until Professional Help Gets To You?

Posted on

If your house has been flooded, the first thing you should do is to call a professional to come help you deal with the damage. Water will do a great deal of damage to your house. But what can you do until some professional help gets there?

Remove Throw Rugs

If you have any throw rugs, you should pick them up and place them so that they can dry. The longer they stay wet, the more likely they are to start molding or mildewing. If the weather is warm enough, hang them up outside. Otherwise, you can hang them up in your bathtub.

That will allow all the excess water to drip out and for the rugs to start to dry out. If the rugs are colored and you have them on top of carpeting, it's doubly important to get the rugs up. The color can leach out onto your carpeting and discolor your carpet.

Create a Barrier For Your Furniture

While there are some things that you will be able to get out of the room, you won't be able to get all your furniture up and out of the affected areas, especially if they are widespread. Instead, what you can do is to put some protective material between the bottom of your furniture and the wet floor or carpeting.

You don't need to go out and buy some special material; all you need is some aluminum foil. Get some foil and double it up. Put it under the base and legs of your furniture. It will create a nice barrier and keep more water from getting to the bottom of your furniture and ruining it any further.

Pick Up the Floor

You may have things like papers and books on the floor of the affected areas. If you do, you need to get them picked up and taken care of immediately. You may be able to dry some things out, but it's more likely that you are going to have to throw all that stuff out. Wet paper mildews very quickly, and you don't want to have that in your house. You also want to make sure that all toys are picked up off the floor.

You can sort them out as to which ones are salvageable and which aren't. Things that probably aren't going to be salvaged will include any electronics. When water gets into those systems, they can be ruined. If you live in a flood-prone area, you can store all those things in plastic boxes, which will help to protect them from damage.

A flooded room or basement can be a huge problem. Professional help from a company like Servpro of Bordentown-Pemberton makes the cleanup so much easier. But you shouldn't just sit around doing nothing until the professionals arrive. If you can start going through the things in the affected area, you can make their job easier.
